More than 20 years making wine. 20 years where they've been slowly, slowly. Caring for the land, spoiling strains. Dumps the raw material.
From the ground up to the label, under the philosophy that quality always goes together with respect for the land.
Luna Beberide Winery and Vineyards dates back to year 1987. Its first location was an old XVI century stope at Villafranca del Bierzo, where the ageing of our wines was produced. There was also a warehouse at Cacabelos where white wines were made. Luna Beberide has been set up with the main aim of developing a philosophy based on high quality and the respect to soil, in order to obtain the best of all their vines.
Location
The vineyard of Luna Beberide is located at Villafranca del Bierzo and Cacabelos, at 400 to 900 metres of latitude, in south-oriented hillsides. Just open the window and admire the landscape that surrounds us. DO Bierzo.
Viñedo
With short and green pruning and yield of 25-30 hl per hectare,
we obtain the best of each vineyard.
It is in this way that we take advantage of the natural qualities of the vineyard, instead of using pesticides.
Luna Beberide has got 80 hectares of vineyards distributed along Cacabelos and Villafranca del Bierzo. They are located at 450 to 800 metres south - oriented hillsides and the soil is arcillous clay with some areas of slate. The age of the vines goes from those of 20 years to the 70 year old ones in the varietals of Mencía. The varietals which are grown in those vineyards are:Gewrztraminer, Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Tempranillo and Mencía. Most of them are trained on the espalier system except the Mencía ones which are “vaso trained”.
From the 80 hectares, a 10 % is used for experiments and research. We work with all type of foreign varietals and we study how do they work out in Bierzo’s landscape and climate.
Thus, currently there are more than 30 different grape varietals planted in our vineyards. That is: Riesling, Cabernet Franc, Pinot Noir, Macabeo, Albariño, Sauvignon Blanc, etc. The work at the vineyard is oriented to obtain the best quality of the grapes and that is why we made short and green pruning and grape “aclareo” (*)before the harvest.
The yields of our vineyards go form 25 to 30 hl. per hectare. They do not use pesticides because we look very much forward to respect the autochthonous fauna and the natural elements of the vineyards.
