From the beginning his big bet was the vineyard. The own plantations that were more than 50 years old, little by little, would be added to new lands chosen with a vision of the future, later optimized to the type of grape they would house. The basis of its wines is found in the suitability of each plot. Its properties mark the subsequent elaboration of its range of wines.
Javier San Pedro Rández, a descendant of winegrowers, decided in 1990 to create Bodegas Vallobera together with Ana Ortega, being the first of the San Pedro family to bottle their wines. It is a family winery whose main objective is to achieve quality in its wines.
The winery began selling young, classic Rioja Alavesa wines, but it was in 1992 when it decided to give its wines a boost and the wines began to age.
The first batch was 100 barrels, inside the first Vallobera crianza from that same vintage was created: 1992.
Vineyard
The vineyards are found almost entirely in the Rioja Alavesa sub-area, in the shadow of the Sierra de Cantabria that protects them from the rigors of northern storms. They are located in the terms of Leza, Elvillar, Páganos, Navaridas, Elciego and especially Laguardia, with an average age of the vineyard of about 30 years. Its height varies from 500 to 650 meters above sea level. The highest plantations are looking for quality to the detriment of quantity, with much more differentiated characteristics that allow us to make more personal wines.
