The origins of Bodegas y Viñedos GÓMEZ CRUZADO date back to 1886, when Ángel Gómez de Arteche, a nobleman related to the Duke of Moctezuma de Tultengo, decided to start making and bottling his own wine in Haro, in the heart of Rioja Alta. Thus, a century-old cellar was born which would go on to make history in Haro and Rioja during the late 19th century.
After its founding, GÓMEZ CRUZADO was bought in 1916 by Ángel and Jesús Gómez Cruzado, both natives of Rioja, for whom today´s winery is named. There have been many investors over the years. At the beginning of the new millenium, the winery changed hands to the Baños family: the current owners, who hail from Badarán and also have ties to Mexico, where they currently reside. Thus, the winery maintains its family-business style.
At present GÓMEZ CRUZADO is run by the leadership team of David González and Juan Antonio Leza, two young Riojan winemakers and viticulture technicians with over a decade of experience as consultants for significant projects in different regions. David and Juan Antonio have been advising the company since 2008 and today it is their primary passion.
Vineyards
Gómez Cruzado wines begin in a traditional landscape: small vines of old bush-trained vineyards in the most elevated areas of Rioja Alta and Alavesa, where great wines strongly rooted in their terroir can be created. Such heritage originates in our ancestors' practices of sustainable and thoughtful wine-making. Thus, the wines of Gómez Cruzado are born in the vineyard through a mix of almost a hundred different supervised plots across three well-defined regions.
Privileged Terroirs; their grapes grow in three very different terroirs: Alto Najerilla, Bajo Najerilla and Sierra Cantabria. Together these terroirs fit together like puzzle pieces to create our wines' personalities. Three microclimates and three soil types portray the nuanced wealth which DOCa Rioja boasts.
This mythical region is found in the foothills of the Sierra de Cantabria (Rioja Alavesa and Rioja Alta). The bush vines grow in poor, whitish, calcareous-clay soils. The majority are located on the sunny side of the highest part of the sierra, at up to 750 meters of altitude.
Wines
With an annual production of less than 200,000 bottles, Gómez Cruzado is the boutique winery of el Barrio de la Estación. Our project brings together all the ingredients necessary for creating wines of extremely high quality: classified origin and marked typicity, dedicated to the fine style of Haro’s Barrio de la Estación.
"The quality of a wine is the sum of many small details, all of which are necessary. We work in the vineyard and in the winery with the utmost respect for the personality of our grapes and the unique character of each vineyard. Our objective is to create wines rooted in their terroir – the most faithful expression of their identity. Before the grapes from each plot arrive to the winery, we already know in which wine they will be used."
