Esta región del noroeste de Italia presenta vinos únicos y apasionantes, elaborados en su mayoría con cepas autóctonas. Los viñedos del Piamonte representan la sexta parte de la superficie total de viñedo de Italia.
El río Po divide al Piamonte en dos. Al sur del río Po está la ciudad de Alba y las colinas de Monferrato y de Langhe. Esta zona concentra casi el 90% de la producción de uva piamontesa y numerosas DOC y DOCG que se superponen. Las escarpadas colinas de Langhe, por ejemplo, acogen muchas DOC, así como también los ilustres DOCG de Barolo y DOCG Barbaresco. Al norte del río Po, las viñas ocupan los suelos rocosos de las bajas colinas alpinas.
En el sureste del Piamonte las principales variedades tintas son la nebbiolo, la barbera y la dolcetto. La barbera, la cepa tinta más plantada en Italia, da un vino tinto, seco y vivo cuyos aromas evocan los frutos rojos y el regaliz. La principal cepa blanca es la aromática moscatel blanca, de granos pequeños, con la que se hace uno de los espumosos más famosos del mundo, el Asti espumante DOCG.
